As one of the earliest members of Jabanto farmers group, Tsegaye Tekebo is a model farmer who is recognized by the regional and federal government for his dedication and hard work in coffee farming. He is also a resource center for other coffee farmers in Biloya and the neighboring villages and has taken it upon himself to supply improved coffee seedlings, represent Jabanto, and also support other farmers on coffee post-harvest handling practices.
Garden coffee production system with well-maintained agroforestry practice well describes Tsegaye’s farm. Perennial shade trees provide light shade for the coffees and there are
also food crops like Enset (false banana) and root crops which are intercropped with coffee. Enset and Taro are the main staple foods of the Gedeo zone. Tsegaye represents a positive trend of the traditional notion of smallholder subsistence farming progressing towards commercially scalable agriculture.
